What is Devshayani Ekadashi?

Dev Shayanai Ekadashi is the day when Lord Vishnu goes to ksheer sagar or the milky ocean, where he sleeps for another four months and this period will be called as Chaturmaas.

This year, Dev Shayani Ekadashi fast is going to be observed on 11th day of Shukla Paksha in the month of Ashadha. This Ekadashi is going to be celebrated on July 25, 2026.

What is the importance of Dev Shayani Ekadashi?

Dev Shayani Ekadashi holds a great religious and spiritual significance and the large number of devotees should observe fast on this specific day to seek blessings of the lord of universe. Devotees of Lord Vishnu fast strictly and pray to the Lord on this holy day. On Dwadashi Tithi, the following day, they break their fast. Lord Vishnu is known as the preserver of this universe and when the preserver will go to ksheer sagar then imagine what will happen and the process happens every year and people during these four months live without the preserver (Lord Vishnu) and during this time period different Gods and Goddesses help the universe to sustains so it helps to maintain the balance. After this, Guru will help then Lord Shiva will take over and Shravan Maas will begin for a month then Lord Krishna, Lord Ganesha, Goddess Durga and Goddess Lakshmi will help this universe and maintain the balance in the absence of Lord Vishnu.

Dev Shayani Ekadashi 2026: Puja Vidhi

1. Have a holy bath first thing after waking up in the morning.2. Give bath to the idol of Lord Vishnu, Lord Krishna, and Laddoo Gopal, then arrange them on a wooden board with Shree Yantra, a symbol of Maa Lakshmi.3. Light a diya with desi ghee in front of the idol and offer five seasonal fruits, dry fruits, tulsi patra is important, panchamrit and adorn the idol with yellow flowers or garlands.4. With genuine devotion, recite the Vishnu Sahasranama.5. Recite the following Krishna Maha Mantra.6. With complete devotion to Lord Vishnu, chant “Om Namo Bhagvate Vasudevaye”.7. People who are unable to maintain a rigorous fast may eat sattvik dishes, such as sabudana kheer and fried potatoes with curd, in the evening after sunset.8. Make donation and engage in other spiritual pursuits.
